Your Step-by-Step Guide to Commissioning a Painting
-
Step 1: Details
Using a photo of your space and dimensions, I’ll create a digital mockup to figure out the perfect layout for your custom painting.
• SIZE: Do you have a size in mind for the painting?
• QUANTITY: Would you like a single piece, or something like a diptych or triptych?
• DIMENSIONS: What is the width of the wall space where the painting will be displayed?
• SPACE: Can you send me a well-lit photo of the space so I can get a sense of the environment?
• BUDGET: Share your budget with me so I can provide a relevant quote.
-
Step 2: Inspiration Conversation
Our conversation about your custom painting is the most important part of our collaboration. I'll ask you some questions to get a sense of your inspiration and vision for the piece.
• MOOD: How do you want your space to feel after the painting is displayed?
• COLOR: Are you working with an interior designer or do you have a specific color palette in mind?
• STYLE: Which paintings or collections do you like the most and why? It could be the composition, lines, patterns, shapes, contrast, mood, or even the words, symbols, or typography.
-
Step 3: Pricing & Deposit
Once I have all the details I need for your custom painting, I'll provide a quote and timeline for the project. A 50% deposit is required to begin the process, with the remainder and shipping due upon completion of the artwork. Please note that commissions are made custom for your space and cannot be returned.
-
Step 4: The Sketch
I'll use the inspiration you've provided to create sketches for the painting, which we will review to ensure we're on the same page. Please keep in mind that while these sketches are fairly realistic, digital will never match hand-painted 100%. A 75% match is a more realistic expectation, as the colors and textures of digital just cannot compare to the real deal. The sketch phase typically takes 2-7 days, depending on the agreed-upon size and complexity of the piece. You may request one round of revisions to the sketches during this phase, and your feedback is welcome and appreciated.
-
Step 5: The Painting
Once you've approved the digital sketch, I'll begin painting. I'll mix colors and send photos along the way to keep you updated on the progress. The painting process typically takes 3-4 weeks, depending on the size and complexity of the piece. When the painting is completed, you'll submit the final 50% payment and I'll ship the artwork to you.
